CAPE JANUARY 2007

Saturday night's all right for fighting
Sunday, January 28, 2007By Jeremy Joffray ~ Southeast Missourian
Testosterone soaked the air at the A.C. Brase Arena Building on Saturday night with a mix of violence, alcohol and attractive women.
Some combination of the three likely helped play a part in what turned out to be a capacity crowd at the Devastation Fight Night mixed martial arts event.
It was the second such event in consecutive weeks as a combination boxing/mixed martial arts event took place Jan. 20 at the Eagles Aerie 3755.
An estimated crowd of 1,600 packed the Arena Building to see what was supposed to be a 14-bout event.
"I came down to one a few years ago and it was all right," Jerry Schweain of Cape Girardeau said. "There's not much going on in this town, so it doesn't take much to draw people to come here. It's more just a good place to go on a Saturday night."
The setup featured an octagon-caged ring where the fights took place. The ring was a smaller version of what is used in the popular Ultimate Fighting Champion. Competitors used punches, kicks, submission holds and other martial "I've liked the action," Phil Wulfers of Cape Girardeau said midway through the event. "The fights have gotten better as they go. The lightweight title fight's been the best one. They've had a good crowd response. It seems like it's full, and when there's a lot of people it makes it more exciting."
A crowd, made of up mostly of young to middle-aged men, had plenty to keep its attention between the fights, a slew of women dressed provocatively and plenty of food and beverages.
"I don't think it brought out a rowdy crowd, just people enjoying themselves and everyone seems to be getting along," Schweain said.
There are already two more Devastation Fight Nights scheduled for Cape Girardeau, March 31 and Sept. 22. A larger scale event at a place like the Show Me Center could be a good draw as well, Wulfers surmised.
"I bet if they could get some of the bigger-name fighters they'd get a good crowd at the Show Me Center," Wulfers said.
Many of the fighters competing Saturday were from the St. Louis area and some areas of Southeast Missouri. Several of the fighters came from Farmington as well as Fredericktown and Poplar Bluff.
Steve Lough of St. Charles fought in the opening bout of the night. Lough has been fighting in mixed martial arts events for eight months and is trained in jiu jitsu.

"I do it basically for the love of the sport," Lough said. "All of your focus is on one thing. You don't hear what's going on outside. You just zone in on the guy you're fighting. It's just you and him."
Lough said he was impressed with the crowd considering this type of event is relatively new down here.
"This is a little smaller than I've been used to. But for this small of a building, it's a real good crowd. For the first time in this area, it's nice to have the support."
Three titles for the Devastation Fight Club were up for grabs Saturday. In the featherweight bout, Torry Bogness secured the first knockout of the night. While there were titles to be had, the fighters are amateurs and are not paid for their fights. And while some may have hopes of fighting in the UFC or other professional fighting organizations, many simply fight for the sport.
"It's just for fun right now," Lough said. "If it [the UFC] happens, it happens."

The final fight of the night saw Mark Brackett from Farmington Martial arts defeat Steve
Woeneke when the corner threw in the towel before the start of the secon round.

Ste. Gen man takes to 'Fight Night' ringSunday, January 28, 2007By TJ Greaney ~ Southeast Missourian
Booker DeRousse woke up at 5 a.m. Friday like he does every other weekday morning.
And before eating or showering, the 25-year-old Ste. Genevieve, Mo., man walked over to the scales to weigh himself. The scales read 210 pounds.
For most people this would be of passing interest. But for DeRousse, a chiseled 6-foot-2 union carpenter, the extra weight set off alarm bells.
That's because DeRousse moonlights as a mixed martial arts fighter in "Devastation Fight Night" a touring, amateur cage match group that puts on exhibitions around the Midwest.
DeRousse was going to be officially weighed Friday night and found himself five pounds over the 205 limit of his weight class.
"I struggle with it, I'm always right on the edge," DeRousse said. "But with a realistic perspective I knew I could lose it. A lot of that is water weight that you can lose through sweat."
Sure enough, after a full day's labor with only light snacks and after his usual two-hour workout, DeRousse tipped the scales at 205 pounds.
Saturday at the Arena Building, the 34 competitors ranged in age from 19 to 46. They wear flexible padded gloves and fight with moves derived from muay thai, jiu-jitsu and judo as well as boxing and kickboxing.
A match ends when a fighter taps out or is judged to be in danger by the referee. If the fight lasts the entire nine minutes of the match, judges decide the winner.
DeRousse was a two-time wrestling state champion in high school. He won the first title in Colorado and the second his senior year in Ste. Genevieve.
Last year a friend saw a flier for Devastation and passed it on to DeRousse. After a scant two weeks of training, DeRousse got into the 20-by-20-foot octagonal cage at an outdoor venue in Farmington, Mo., the first week of October.
"It was about 30 degrees outside, really cold." he said. "I pretty much just knew how to attack then. Not much strategy," he said.
And though he said he dominated much of the fight, he got stuck in a choke hold in the third and final round and the referee stopped the fight in favor of his opponent.
"I think it was ridiculous. I never even got hit once," DeRousse said.
His wife, Crystal, didn't know what to think at first. "I was so mad and proud at the same time," she said of the first fight.
Paul Farwig, promoter and owner of the Devastation Fight Night, calls DeRousse one of the best fighters in Missouri.
"He's real good. You can see he has a very strong wrestling background," Farwig said.
Farwig pays for travel, food and hotels for his fighters but by Missouri law isn't allowed to offer a purse for the fights. He said that as hard as it is for some to believe, the fighters enjoy the competition of the cage fight.
"They love it. It's their passion," he said.
Late Saturday night DeRousse tangled with Kris "the Undertaker" Coffin, who fights mostly upright. Hahn encouraged him to use wrestling attacks to take Coffin's legs out. However, DeRousse lost by decision.

SEMISSOURIAN STORY 1-27-07

Devastation Fight Night features17 matches on tonight's card
Saturday, January 27, 2007By Toby Carrig ~ Southeast Missourian
The promoter has two more bouts scheduled for Cape Girardeau this year.
Paul Farwig believes those who attend tonight's Devastation Fight Night event at the A.C. Brase Arena Building will like what they see.
In fact, Farwig is banking on it so much he already has two more events on his calendar for Cape Girardeau this year -- one for March 31 and another for Sept. 22.
"We've got a good evening planned so far, and everyone down there has been really good to deal with," Farwig said Friday while on his way to a weigh-in event at Buffalo Wild Wings. "I think everyone who sees it is going to tell other people about it and we're going to get a lot of interest."
The mixed martial arts card is tentatively set for 17 bouts, with three championships for the St. Louis-based Devastation Fight Club. The championship fights, which will be scattered throughout the night, will be for the welterweight, featherweight and light heavyweight titles. In addition, the night is expected to end with a match in the heavyweight division, which is 265 pounds.
Tickets are available today at A.C. Brase Arena with packages ranging from $20 bleacher seating to $70 for seats with drinks and food.
Mixed martial arts returned to the Cape Girardeau area for the first time in years last week with a card sponsored by the Eagles Aerie 3775 at the Eagles club. That event featured some boxing as well as mixed martial arts in a ring.
Tonight's event is in a cage, which Farwig said makes a difference to some.
"We have people call and ask us if these are in a cage or a ring," Farwig said.
The night's card is sanctioned by St. Louis-based Kick International.
Farwig said the MMA features athletes with backgrounds in many forms of fighting. The light heavyweight bout, for instance, features Kris Coffin, who has been a personal trainer for body builders, and Ste. Genevieve resident Booker DeRousse, who was a high school wrestler.
"Both are trained in jiu-jitsu; Muay Thai, which is a form of kickboxing; boxing and wrestling," Farwig said.

Cape Girardeau Fights

Double dose of bouts is in cards for CapeSaturday, January 20, 2007By Toby Carrig ~ Southeast Missourian
Starting tonight, a pair of mixed martial arts events will play out over two weekends.
Fans of mixed martial arts have waited years for an event in Cape Girardeau.
Now, all of a sudden, they have two events on back-to-back weekends.
The Eagles Aerie 3775 is hosting "Rumble on the River," a mix of boxing matches and mixed martial arts events. The event begins at 7 p.m. tonight with gates opening at the new Eagles club at 321 N. Spring St. at 5:30 p.m. The Sikeston-based Absolute Fighting Championships is sanctioning the event, with participants from Miletich Fighting Systems of Southeast Missouri and the Bootheel Bombers Boxing Club.
On Jan. 27, the Devastation Fight Club out of St. Louis is bringing a card to the A.C. Brase Arena Building. It has a 15-bout card scheduled with sanctioning from Kick International's mixed martial arts division in St. Louis.
While a state official would like the mixed martial arts to fall under its oversight, organizers of the events for Cape Girardeau and city officials have no concerns about the safety or security of the events.
Paul Farwig, who founded the Devastation Fight Club, has about 20 years of experience with promotions in boxing and kickboxing, including a two-year stint in 1996 and 1997 with the controverial Toughman competition series organized by Art Dore.
During that time, Farwig said, the state of Missouri passed a ban on Toughman events that wiped out a card he was promoting in St. Louis County.
Mixed martial arts, he said, is a whole different fight game from Toughman, which according to a 2003 report had eight deaths associated with its events in 24 years.
"Mixed martial arts takes all the skills of full-contact fighting -- jiu-jitsu, Greco-Roman wrestling, kickboxing. All-around athletes do this," he said. "The reason this is safer is because we have well-trained fighters. Toughman is just guys who think they're tough. They weren't in shape and they didn't have experience. We didn't want guys with experience; we just wanted guys to go in there and whale.
"We have quite a few rules, and the guys are just well-trained and in shape."
Timothy Lueckenhoff, an administrator with Missouri's Office of Athletics, still would like to see the amateur mixed martial arts regulated by the state. He said legislation was introduced in the past but failed.
Professional bouts are not legal, Lueckenhoff added, but he said it was hard to figure out which amateur athletes traveling state to state to compete are being compensated beyond the legitimate reimbursements of travel and training. The governing is left to sanctioning groups such as Kick International.
"We're hoping to get it regulated," Lueckenhoff said. "In my mind, it's out of control, because you don't know where these guys are coming from, if they fought in Illinois yesterday or not."
The Eagles expect athletes from about seven different states on their card, which includes about a 50-50 mix of boxing events and mixed martial events.
John A. Heuer, who is helping to organize the event for the Eagles, said the members were having discussions about hosting an event in their new hall when they became aware of the Absolute Fighting Challenge organization, which has conducted events in Dexter. They had an event Jan. 6 at the Sikeston Eagles Club.
No one was certain the last time Cape Girardeau hosted a similar event, but Heuer speculated that it may have been more than a decade ago. "About 10 or 15 years ago, the Elks club did have some events, and they were very successful," he said.
Heuer said the "Rumble on the River" will include a full slate of entertainment, including music before, between and after the bouts.
Tickets for the Eagles show include $20 general admission seats or VIP tables with full meal, drinks and parking at $360 for a group of six.
The Eagles organizers mentioned that among those in attendance at their event will be the mayor, Jay Knudtson.
Knudtson knows not everyone in Cape Girardeau will endorse mixed martial arts.
"It is something that has a degree of popularity, and I also know it's highly controversial," Knudtson said. "Entertainment takes all different forms, and I have a lot of respect for the leadership of the Eagles."
He said he expects his attendance to give him a better understanding of the nature of the sport.
The city's hosting of the Jan. 27 event never was discussed at the city council level, Knudtson said.
Dan Muser, the director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, said the decision to accept the agreement with Farwig's Devastation Fight Club was made by his staff.
???????
"Anytime you get a first-time event," Farwig???????? said, "we try to check everything out and verify that that they pay the bills and they're dependable. We did check with Poplar Bluff, which has hosted these, and they said it's a good event."
Muser said he doesn't see any controversy to the event. He said the promoter will be providing security for the event and that the city won't be making any special arrangements on that end.
"It's kind of like when we had wrestling here before," said Muser, referencing past events put on by the St. Louis-based Gateway Championship Wrestling. "This may be more like boxing and somewhat less theatrical than wrestling."
"It is kind of a high-end operation," he added. "Certainly more of a high-end operation than the wrestling does. It's like dinner-theater except the theater happens to be martial arts."
Indeed, tickets for the event at the Brase Arena -- billed as "UFC-style amateur cage fights" on the city's Web site -- are ranging from $20 bleacher seats to $70 gold seats with drinks and food.
Farwig said ticket sales are going well, and he expects more than 1,300 people to attend.
He was not deterred by the preceding weekend's "Rumble on the River," saying positive things about the group sanctioning that event.
The Eagles club can hold about 600 people for tonight's event.
"We weren't wanting to butt heads with those guys coming to town next week," Heuer said.
Good thing. In mixed martial arts, butting heads is not allowed.

IFL FEBRUARY 23

The International Fight League has announced that Miletich middleweight fighter Robbie "Ruthless" Lawler will fight Eduardo Pamplona at the organization's upcoming February 23rd card to be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Lawler, who has a record of 12-4, will be hoping to build upon his recent performance at PRIDE 32 on October 21st, in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he quickly knocked out Joey Villasenor with a highlight reel flying knee at 22 seconds of the first round. Since his back to back UFC losses in 2004, where Lawler lost to Nick Diaz and Evan Tanner at UFC 47 and UFC 50 respectively, the 24 year old fighter has gone 4-1 in the last two years, with his only loss coming to Jason "Mayhem" Miller, via a third round side-choke at Icon Sport 47 on September 2nd last fall.Pamplona will bring a record of 5-1 to the upcoming fight with Lawler, and has not lost a fight since his MMA debut in 2002, where the Brazilian fighter lost by unanimous decision to Sanae Kikuta at Pancrase: Spirit 8. Most recently, Pamplona defeated veteran fighter Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons by unanimous decision at Showfight 5 on November 9th, 2006.
The February 23rd event's IFL team match-ups include the Toronto Dragons taking on the Portland Wolfpack, and the Chicago Red Bears versus the New York Pitbulls.
